Loess Hills Tractor Ride

The Loess Hills Tractor Ride is an annual event that originates from Mapleton, Iowa.  Typically the Saturday before Labor Day weekend, riders from around the Midwest gather together for a ride through the beautiful Loess Hills of Monona County.

This 65-mile full-day event features stops at the Timber Ridge Ranch and Winery and the Feed Bunk in Moorhead.  The Timber Ridge Ranch, long known for it's hospitality and unique character, is a ranch-type saloon, restaurant and recreational area between Mapleton and Castana, Iowa.

Along the way, riders are surrounded by the best the Loess Hills have to offer.  Hills, valleys, ponds, wildlife and winding roads.  If road conditions are suitable for travel, the ride will generally include some dirt roads at Timber Ridge and the Loess Hills State Forest, located west of Moorhead.

The ride continues south from Timber Ridge to Turin.  Making use of the Loess Hills Scenic Biway, riders travel winding gravel and paved roads.  Some of these roads are canopied with Oak, Cottonwood and Maple trees.  From Turin, the ride continues south to the Loess Hills State Forest.  Riders can, if they choose, stop at the observation deck overlooking Preparation Canyon, the Missouri River valley and the hills of Nebraska.

After leaving the Loess Hills State Forest, the ride turns northeast to Moorhead for lunch.  The antique tractors turn a lot of heads as they consume most of the parking area on Main Street.  After lunch, riders can look forward to a paved highway on the way back to Mapleton.  The Leech Hollow road may be paved, but that doesn't take away from the scenic beauty of the ever eroding Loess Hills landscape.

Browse the website, look at the pictures and be sure to join us next year for an exciting trip on the Loess Hills Tractor Ride.

We set a record of almost 150 tractors at the 2009 ride.  This was an increase of about 30 over 2008.  If we have a turnout like that again for 2010, we may break the ride into two groups.  We thank you in advance for pre-registering to give us a better idea of how many riders will be joining us.

The 2010 Loess Hills Tractor Ride is scheduled for Aug. 28, 2010 - 8am.
